There is only one hotel in the Indian Ocean that has been completely designed around Feng Shui and that hotel is Legends, lying next to an idyllic cove, near to the village of Grand Gaube in the north of Mauritius.
Stretching languorously along a silky, sandy beach, Legends promises harmony and well-being. The ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui pervades the hotel. There is equilibrium between the 5 elements of Water, Earth, Wood, Fire and Metal, which helps positive energy to circulate.
Legends provides a luxurious opportunity for the body and soul to repose awhile. Space, the natural or reflective shades of the décor, the beauty of bamboo, the stone walls and the gentle sound of the chimes – all are reminders that this is a Feng Shui world.
Feng Shui or the art of living in harmony with the world around us
Literally meaning “wind and water”, Feng Shui sets out how to live in harmony with what is around us. To obtain proper equilibrium, Chi energy must be used correctly. Chi is the universal vital force found in everything and is divided into Yin and Yang energies, opposites but inseparable.
Feng Shui philosophy also makes use of the traditional elements of Chinese astrology, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.
Feng Shui at Legends
Designed with the guidance of Master Chuah so that overall it resembles a dragon swallowing a pearl, Legends is a superb reflection of the Feng Shui spirit so that each stay is a successful moment of well-being. For instance, the paths tracing their way to the hotel are
so designed that Chi can circulate properly.
At the entrance, pretty Japanese fish move around in a pool orientated towards the reception desk – as water is synonymous with wealth in Feng Shui philosophy, it should run towards Reception. In various places, the tinkle of chimes helps to retain Chi.
So that guests can better appreciate Feng Shui philosophy, every Sunday Legends goes Zen, including a talk on the philosophy by hotel staff. There is also a themed menu based on the 5 elements served once a week, in itself a gastronomic delight.
Numbers are important in Feng Shui. Some are very positive, such as 1, 6, 8 and 9. So there are 198 rooms, the two villas Ming and Tang have an area of 98 m2 and the Emperor Villa 298 m2. The hotel’s telephone number is 204 91 91. The tables in Legends’ Gingko restaurant have no corners, as it helps Chi to circulate.
It is important to know which numbers are important to you as what holds true for one person may not be the same for someone else.
Working out your Kua
Your own personal number calculation
Men
Total the last two numbers of your year of birth and, if they are more than 9, add them together. Then take that number away from 10.
Example: 1968, 6 + 8 = 14, 1 + 4 = 5, 10 – 5 = 5
Women
Total the last two numbers of your year of birth, until you have a single digit. Then add 5 and, if the total is more than 9, add those numbers together.
Example: 1970, 7 + 0 = 7, 7 + 5 = 12, 1 + 2 = 3
Note
For a man, if his Kua calculation produces 5, this is changed to 2
For a woman, if her calculation produces 5, this is changed to 8.
